No. Oakleaf does not offer advances or fund selected manuscripts in the way a traditional publisher does. Authors fund their own publishing projects. Oakleaf provides professional guidance, oversight, coordination and support.

Does Oakleaf accept every manuscript?

No. We first consider whether the manuscript, the author’s expectations and Oakleaf’s services are a suitable match. We may recommend further writing or editorial work before publication, or explain honestly if we are not the right fit.

Who owns the copyright?

The author retains copyright in their original work unless a separate written agreement states otherwise.

Who owns the cover and production files?

Ownership and permitted use of cover artwork, illustrations, formatted files and other commissioned materials are confirmed in the relevant professional agreement before work begins.

Who is the publisher of record and whose ISBN is used?

This is confirmed in writing before publication. The answer may depend on the chosen publishing route, imprint and distribution arrangement.

What does the Oakleaf package fee cover?

It covers the guidance, oversight, coordination and support described in the selected Bronze, Silver or Gold package.

What may cost extra?

Depending on the manuscript and package, additional costs may include editing, proofreading, cover design, illustrations, formatting, typesetting, website development, printing, proof copies, specialist marketing materials and other professional services. These are explained and agreed before work begins.

Does Oakleaf add commission to independent professionals’ fees?

No undisclosed commission is added. Authors are told who is carrying out the work, what the service costs and how payment will be handled.

Who receives income from book sales?

The sales and royalty arrangement is explained in writing before publication. It depends on whose retailer and distribution accounts are used and where the book is sold.

Does distribution guarantee bookshop stocking?

No. Distribution allows retailers and bookshops to order a book. It does not guarantee that they will stock it, display it or actively promote it.

Does Oakleaf guarantee sales?

No. No ethical publisher or publishing-support company can guarantee sales, reviews, media coverage, awards or commercial success.

What marketing does Oakleaf provide?

Oakleaf provides the marketing guidance and support described in the chosen package. This may include planning, materials, launch guidance, ideas, introductions and suitable promotional opportunities.

What is the author expected to do?

Authors are expected to actively promote their books using their own networks, social media, personal and professional contacts, community and local opportunities. Successful marketing is a partnership.

Can I choose my own editor or designer?

This can be discussed at the start. Any professional involved must be suitable for the project and able to work within the agreed publishing process and standards.

What happens if I stop the project?

The written agreement explains cancellation, work already completed, payments due, file handover and any non-refundable costs. Authors should read and understand these terms before signing.

What is Oakleaf’s policy on artificial intelligence?

Oakleaf requires honest disclosure of substantive AI-generated text, images and translations. Acceptable AI-assisted uses and author responsibilities are set out in Oakleaf’s Artificial Intelligence Addendum.
