Stories, Memories and the Characters Who Made Us

Derry author and Oakleaf Press founder Jane Buckley joins Féile Derry 2026 for a lively, relaxed and interactive celebration of the stories that make us who we are. From family legends and childhood memories to local characters and moments that never made it into the history books, Jane will explore why ordinary lives are often the most fascinating.
Bring along a memory, a family tale, an old photograph or a character nobody else could invent. There will be laughter, audience participation and plenty of Derry stories along the way.
You do not need to be a writer, and there will be no speeches, no homework and absolutely no requirement to be famous. With the world we’re living in, we could all do with an hour of conversation, laughter and good Derry craic. Come along and join us!
The Border in Mind – Book Launch

Join Dr Declan Lyons, consultant psychiatrist, Clinical Associate Professor at Trinity College Dublin and author of The Border in Mind, for an evening exploring one of the most important conversations facing Ireland today.
Drawing on decades of experience in psychiatry, peace-building and human behaviour, Dr Lyons examines how identity, memory and trauma continue to shape attitudes towards constitutional change. Thought-provoking, balanced and compassionate, The Border in Mind encourages readers to look beyond politics and consider the psychological journey towards a shared future.
Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity to meet the author, ask questions and have your copy personally signed.

Join Project Children, Monaghan County Council, Denis Mulcahy, author Jane Buckley, former Project Children participants, host families, volunteers, and friends for the official launch of Project Children: The Legacy.
Founded in 1975 by the Mulcahy brothers, Project Children welcomed more than 23,000 children from Northern Ireland to the United States over five decades, creating opportunities for friendship, understanding, and connection across communities.
This special evening will celebrate more than 50 years of Project Children and the extraordinary relationships formed between Ireland and America through one of the most successful people-to-people peace initiatives of our time.
Through the voices of those who lived it, attendees will hear stories from people whose lives were touched by the program, reflect on Project Children’s legacy, and celebrate the publication of a book that preserves these memories and experiences for future generations.
Whether you were a participant, host family member, volunteer, supporter, or simply interested in this remarkable story, we invite you to join us for an evening of reflection, connection, and celebration as we honour the people and experiences behind this extraordinary legacy and celebrate the lasting bonds created between Northern Ireland, Ireland, and America.
