Project Children - The Legacy
More than 23,000 children as young as eight. Fifty years. One extraordinary story of hope.
In 1975, two brothers had a simple idea. Denis and Pat Mulcahy believed that if children from Northern Ireland could escape the Troubles for one summer, they might glimpse a different way of living.
Over the next forty years, more than 23,000 Catholic and Protestant children crossed the Atlantic to stay with 16,000 American host families — discovering new friendships, new possibilities and, for many, a whole new world.
This book tells history through the people who lived it: the children, parents, volunteers and families who opened their homes and hearts. Extraordinary, human and unforgettable.
Project Children – The Legacy will be released in October 2026

Oakleaf Press helps authors professionally produce and publish their books. We provide guidance, oversight and coordination, while trusted independent editors, designers and other specialists carry out the work your book needs.
Authors pay Oakleaf for the support included in their chosen package. Any additional professional services are quoted separately and agreed before work begins. You retain ownership and rights to your work, remain in control of the decisions surrounding your book, and are never committed to work you have not approved.
Meet Jane Buckley
Jane is a Derry based, Irish author, publisher and founder of Oakleaf Press. After navigating the publishing world with her own Stones Corner series, she created Oakleaf to give other writers the kind of personal, practical guidance she wished she’d had herself.
Oakleaf is deliberately small and hands-on. Jane works closely with each author from manuscript to publication, bringing in trusted professional editors, proofreaders, designers and typesetters wherever their expertise is needed.
Technology has its place, but Oakleaf does not use AI as a substitute for professional editors, designers or an author’s own voice. Books are written by people, edited by people and shaped by people — and we think that matters.
Jane has sat where you’re sitting. That’s why Oakleaf is personal.
